The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), in its 196th meeting held on 27th June 2025, has announced a significant initiative — the Scheme to Promote Registration of Employers/Employees (SPREE). This scheme aims to expand the reach of the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Act, 1948 by encouraging unregistered factories, establishments, and workers to come under the ESI social security umbrella.

The SPREE scheme offers a one-time opportunity for employers and employees to register under the ESI Act without facing penalties, interest, or retrospective inspections. It is designed to bring unregistered employers and workers—particularly contractual, casual, and temporary employees—within the fold of social security benefits like medical care, sickness benefits, maternity benefits, and more.



📋 Key Highlights

     🔹 Scheme Period:
           1st July 2025 to 31st December 2025

     🔹 Coverage:

  • Factories and establishments that have not yet registered under the ESI Act.

  • Employees eligible for ESI benefits who are currently unregistered.

     🔹 Registration Requirements:

  • Employers are required to register their factory/establishment under the ESI Act within 15 days from the date the Act becomes applicable to their unit.

  • Employers must also register all eligible employees under the scheme.

      🔹 Coverage Date:

  • Employers registering during the SPREE period will be considered covered from the date of registration or from the date declared by them.

  • Newly registered employees will be covered from the date of their registration.

      🔹 Important Note:
            This scheme does not affect any actions taken or required under the ESI Act before 1st July 2025.
